WELCOME

THE HELLENIC INSTITUTE at Royal Holloway, University of London is a research centre for the study of Hellenism. Based in the Department of History, it maintains close links with the Department of Classics and cooperates with other RHUL Departments and Centres. The Institute also has a long history of working with other institutions in the University of London and with The Hellenic Centre, the main cultural hub of the Greek and Cypriot communities in London.

It promotes the study of Greek language, literature and history, from the archaic and classical age, through the Hellenistic and Roman times, Byzantium and the Post-Byzantine period, to the establishment of the Modern Greek State and the modern world. The Hellenic Institute hosts a number of research projects and organises seminars, lectures and conferences addressed to students, scholars and to a wider public.

The Hellenic Institute currently runs two taught postgraduate degree courses: MA in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies and MA History: Hellenic Studies. It also offers supervision to students who pursue MPhil/PhD research in various subjects within the field of Hellenic, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. Staff of the Institute also contribute to undergraduate courses on Byzantine history and Greek language at RHUL.

The Hellenic Institute currently receives funding from Royal Holloway, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, the A.G. Leventis Foundation, the Hellenic Foundation (London), the Orthodox Cultural Association (Athens), The Friends of the Hellenic Institute and private donors.

Under the directorship of the late Julian Chrysostomides the Institute expanded its academic and research activities. To honour her memory the Friends of the Hellenic Institute established The Julian Chrysostomides Bursaries Fund. She will be remembered as a true scholar and an affectionate and inspiring teacher.
